For All Mankind

Today, Monday, July 20, 2009, marks the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. 40 years ago today, man set foot on another world. It remains humanity's finest achievement.

To celebrate, we'll watch the 1989 documentary, For All Mankind. This movie is currently available on The Criterion Collection on DVD, and newly released on Blu-Ray. Now I really wish I had a big-screen teevee.

This is one of my favorite documentaries, which means it's one of my favorite movies, period. For All Mankind chronicles the history of the Apollo program as a single epic journey to the moon and back. It contains NASA footage never before seen, from over 6 million feet of film. The footage is spectacular, amazing, humbling. It's remarkable what human beings are capable of, when they're not devoted to war Enjoy.
